Remembering 9.11

This Wednesday our bells will ring in remembrance of the attacks and lives lost on September 11, 2001.

There will be a single bell toll at the following times:

  • 8:46 am Flight 11 crashes into the North Tower of the World Trade Center
  • 9:03 am Flight 175 crashes into the South Tower of the World Trade Center
  • 9:37 am Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon
  • 10:03 am Flight 93 crashes in Shanksville, PA

The bells will then toll the “De Profundis” at 10:15 am. The De Profundis bell is a slow measured solemn ringing of the bells traditionally done at the end of the day as a reminder to pray for the dead. The De Profundis prayer is a prayer based on Psalm 130 that is traditionally said for the repose of the souls of those who have died. The ringing of De Profundis bells has been a tradition of the church since the year 1095.
