Lay Readers/Lectors

Worship Ministry

proclaiming the word of God

Lectors are men and women, adult and youth who assist with the reading of scripture during our worship service. Some Lectors may also choose to become "Eucharistic Lay Readers". They are persons licensed by the bishop to lead public worship under the direction of the member of the clergy in charge of the congregation. The Eucharistic lay reader must be a confirmed adult communicant in good standing and recommended by the member of the clergy in charge of the congregation. Guidelines for training and licensing of Eucharistic lay readers are established by the bishop. Licensed Eucharistic lay readers are commissioned for this ministry. Eucharistic Lay readers have traditionally held an important place in the American church, dating from colonial times when clergy were scarce.
